What's a thing you hate (media, food, cloths, etc.), but find yourself defending when you hear others rag on it?

Basically, you hate something or dislike it. Then you look or seek that cathartic agreement that such game, movie, cloths, song, food, person, etc. Is awful. Then bam, you realize the other person's reasoning is a bit off in your opinion and you end up defending it.

Maybe they actually didn't "get it" or they missed something, or you come to realize their hate is just dumb to you. Of course that points out some inner turmoil and maybe yours is too...but lets say hypothetically its fine.

So what was a situation where you just outright expected that cathartic yeah doesnt that thing suck and halfway through the other person's arguments you were like:

"...yeah...but actually that's not so bad, that part made sense, well the point of that is to be that so i get that but did you notice this is the reason it sucks...no...ok."

Personally, when i read some arguments that arent as thought out or say its a movie and they explain they watched 15 minutes fell asleep woke up at the end and didn't get it, 1/10. Its like i agree with the person in that movie case, it wasn't enough to keep their attention, but also im like but did you really even see it or "get it" and why it's actually bad. Or a game where the person plays the first hour or so, and sticks with the idea it's bad and doesnt point out the gameplay or something but just that the opening hook was not enough, and I'm sitting there like well its a bad game but that was the tutorial...it does open up and then i notice im defending something i hated.

Sonic games hands down. Yes, a lot of the 3D games suck, but when people use that as an excuse to crap on those awesome 2D Genesis games by claiming the series was always bad. I find myself defending the blue hedgehog.

hmm- i'd wager most reasonable people have that sort of relationship to their nationality and/or hometown- and i don't trust anyone that doesn't at least have a tinge of self-loathing. overt patriotism usually indicates myopic thinking- but it's the whole 'you don't get to make fun of the place you're not from' thing.

but regarding less serious matters- my answer would probably be low-brow pop music. i can't stand a lot of it personally, but i'll fistfight anyone that sneers at someone for the music they find meaning in.

I don't read as much criticism as you do, but I'm struggling to think of a single instance of something like this, unless it's for the sake of devil's advocacy or something like that.

I defended Forspoken even though I agreed the game didn't look that good. It was fair to say the world looked empty and the gameplay looked shallow, but people were getting so worked up about the "cringe writing". First off, bad writing in a video game is about as ubiquitous as sand on a beach. Second, most of the character's quips were straight out of Dante's Book of Smartassery, and yall loved it from him. Hell, Nathan Drake and Daxter mostly ever got eye rolls out of me, and people point to those games as pinnacles of storytelling.

Forspoken certainly didn't turn out well, but it rubbed me the wrong way how hard people were looking for reasons to hate it.

I defended the Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport series for being Simcades, because I loved these two franchises as I grew up playing with them from my childhood to teenhood. I can tell their handling model-wise feels more simple and forgiving than the proper Sim Racing games like iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, etc.

I can tell that Gran Turismo & Forza Motorsport are ideal for motor racing fans that are new to realistic racing experiences or only play with controller pads, as I know, not everyone can afford or have space for Sim Racing wheel peripheral (Either mounted to the cockpit, wheel stand or desktop).

I have been loving PlayStation and Xbox home consoles for a very long time, even though I'm more of a Gaming PC guy these days.

Yeah I guess like... it would just have to be a case of someone just making shit up and even then I wouldn't call it defending because I would respond with this thing sucks for so many other reasons you can pick any other one!

But otherwise... yeah I don't defend things I don't like at least in some respect.

Might win this with that take. Its annoying because you will not even like sonic that much. you could just not despise it to heaven and not have had the worst time controlling it. Maybe you dont run into spikes all the time, or don't get frustrated by it. You could just play it and not get mad when it slows down since the most hate comes from this misguided idea that all you do is press forward and its bad when not going fast. Then I have myself defending it like a super fan because i just don't enjoy half informed opinions. I'll state how it seems most stopped playing past early levels because they all (2d wise) used to get more precise and not just hold forward later on. Then i think sega took criticism to heart and made it more about speed, which furthered the hot takes of just pressing forward leading to me sounding like a lunatic defending a bunch of games that i think are fine and can be fun but yes plenty more i play and like more. lol. Yes, retroactively saying a series was always bad is annoying cause again i can't defend it much since its not like the thing was mindblowingly good...so it comes down to naw it wasnt that bad...which just ends up with me defending it.

@eccentrix: Yeah it could just be someone misrepresenting something and even though you don't like it or hate it, you defended it. Say someone said shaving all your hair off if you're going bald is bad. And you also hated going bald, but you defended the idea of doing it since you figure some people don't like the patch hair look or some look better with it. Sorta that way. For games, it could be someone saying Elden Ring is bad because there is nothing to do, and you're just stuck in a dungeon for the entire game, you'd be defending it by saying hey i don't like it but i think you were stuck in the tutorial or someone said i keep dying in the open area...and you'd say it's a bad game to me but you're not supposed to try fight that boss it's a hint to run from stuff once in a while. Again the person could defend it and say that's bad game design, setting me up for something and saying don't do it is pointless, and then you'd defend that all the while you hate the game hypothetically. It's rare but happens. @gtxforza Really? I assumed consensus was those are good games for racing and turning realism vs arcade. Yeah, i could see myself defending it even if i rarely play longer than a race. Don't particularly like Gran Turismo but i will defend it for hitting its niche. @efesell Making stuff up seems to be the main idea here right? Sometimes you can hate something heck even a political party. But you won't condone someone spreading lies just to make the other party seem bad...they can do that without help in your eyes as a person, regardless of party. So i'd defend an opposite in that case. @judaspete Forspoken was summed up well by some of the staff on this site. I can't remember who, but he said people act like dialogue has been prestige tv on average for games. Forspoken's dlc improved it and it's sad they thought that dialogue was still appealing but for a company kinda foreign to the market they were attacking i give them a bone. They tried and didn't go with a gruff standard non-controversial (for the west at the moment) protagonist that kicks butt and takes names. The generic ones we got in the 360 era. The gameplay was flashy and needed a bit more substance along with more creative quest and enemies, but it still was ragged on. I don't like it. Yet I find myself defending the hyperbole.

Football/ Soccer. I hate it and don't watch it and find it frustrating when people I meet only want to talk about it but for some reason I still feel the need to defend it

Yeah, this. There's a lot of music I'm not into, or even actively dislike, but when somebody gives a tirade on "music sucks now" it annoys me no end. Just find something you like yourself, dude, who gives a crap if other people enjoy a thing. Taste is subjective, I don't believe in some art being truly better than other art at a level beyond purely personal preference or technical skill.

The Wii U! A really poor console when it comes to menus, number of games, and sales figures. But people treat it like a complete punchline, ignoring how the Switch is a direct successor to the concept and that a lot of the best Switch games were on Wii U first.

Wow, great point. I never really considered that most people flip for switch games then never point out they're playing remakes of wii u or wii games. Wii U was super dumb and i still wish i never brought it. I'm guessing they had the switch idea and didn't want to take the loss till tech improved...but im no scientist...is wii u about as strong as an untethered switch...lol people make it seem that way with all the talk about fps drops. Thanks for the input. PS, gamecube was another good system but not great and great is needed in a competition vs like 4 companies. That's why im glad people still try to keep going for making systems...they really have a monopoly but consumers don't care cause having 10 boxes to play games is confusing. so we let fat cats get rich with no remorse than pitty them when they say someone got their game used (technically i do that's the dev side lol)

Cheap Chinese buffets. Look, I know they're bad and terrible for you. I will also knock you and your sweet Granny Lucy the fuck out the way when that fresh General Tso's hits the line.

If people would have actually bought the thing and used it instead of just dunking on it they would have realized that the Wii U actually ruled. It didn't have a ton of games but the few it had were generally top tier. Oh and the disks had rounded edges.

The gamepad controller thingy was really comfy to use and the TV remote feature on it worked better for me than the actual remote that came with my TV. The Wii U gamepad basically birthed the modern bigger style handheld Switch/Steam Deck form factor. It was such a good size for what it was and I found it much comfier to use than the Switch in handheld mode.

edit: Oh I forgot, the Wii U gamepad also came with a wireless charging stand that is what the Switch should have had. That charging stand was great and is still a much slicker solution than anything offered for the Switch or things like the Steam Deck. Even the third party stands for the Switch that basically copy the Wii U gamepad stand don't work as slickly as that thing did.

Oh and the Nintendo Land main plaza theme. You can't find that anywhere else since that game's Wii U only. Back in the day GB dedicated an entire video to how much that song slaps.
