What are your guys thoughts on mascot horror these days?

It started when Fnaf became popular inspired a lot of horror games based around mascots such as Bendy,Poppy, and many more. Heck Even Robbie was considered a prototype of sorts of for the mascot horror genre.

Fnaf is also got more games than most indie games and getting novels, graphic novels, and later even a movie. So what are your thoughts on the Mascot horror genre?

I'm too old. I'm aware of the games but I've never played them and they don't really appeal to me though having not tried them it's possible I would like them if I did.

In a way they remind me of old FMV games like Night Trap or Double Switch and I think they share certain mechanical ideas.

I like occasionally watching people play indie horror games but that's about it, early on i really liked seeing FNAF's story play out.

Since then obviously it's become a bit tainted by people trying to become the next big thing and sell merch so it's pretty ugly, but if a good game comes out of it eventually then whatever.

Never liked it, still don't. The fact that the FNAF creator is a fucko didn't help. I've always enjoyed horror that was slow builds of dread, not just pop-up scares, and the whole mascot aspect of it was so doofy to me that I couldn't take it seriously. It mostly reminded me of newgrounds games circa 2001. And the final nail in the coffin is that it's streamed by some of the mostly obnoxious people online. Screaming and cursing isn't a talent, and it doesn't deserve to be rewarded. This is math.

Sorry if that yucks some yums, I just never saw the appeal and greatly felt a repulsion.

I’ll admit that I judge this genre pretty harshly. It’s something I really directly associate with YouTubers overreacting to jump scares, to entertain kids that really hold YouTuber game opinions in (overly) high esteem. While conversely most game reviewers and serious game players I’m familiar with think very little of “mascot horror” or just don’t talk about it at all.

So I’m honestly really checked out on this genre of horror. Maybe it’s gotten noticeably better since early FNAF? To me, it’s emblematic of lesser-informed players who just follow trendy games on YouTube, perhaps missing more interesting games, horror or otherwise, that don’t make for such bite-sized react videos on YouTube.

Not on the level of ascot horror, which is just the existential dread of knowing someone, anyone, thought ascots were a good idea.

@sparky_buzzsaw: hey! Ascots rule! Just ask Thurston Howell the third! Beats a neckerchief anyway. That’s a peasants neck covering!
